Downloadable for Windows XP, Vista and even Windows 7

Microsoft has finally released Microsoft Security Essentials anti-malware service after testing the free security suite dubbed Morro for long. In June, Microsoft revealed that the security suite would be available for public testing later. Microsoft Security Essentials is available for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 from here. This software is entirely free to download and requires no registration.

Windows 7 Missed out on the early preorder discounts? Popular retailer Newegg.com has listed the OEM prices for Windows 7, which will be offered at less than half what Microsoft will charge for a retail copy.Newegg hasn’t listed any prerequisites for buying the OEM version, such as the purchase of any additional hardware. Past OEM copies have prevented users from taking advantage of Microsoft’s support options, however, and the packaging and instructions are usually minimal.

For those willing to forgo the additional perks, however, the price may be worth it. Microsoft pursued a similar strategy with Windows Vista, charging “system builders,” or anyone building a PC, about half of what it asked retail buyers to pay. Of course, that’s nothing compared to the huge preorder discounts that Microsoft offered in September, when it offered a preordered copy for as little as $29.99.

So by now you all know about Microsoft’s painful, cringe-inducing Windows 7 party idea, and the accompanying goodie packs. What you might not have known is that Redmond also put together a ‘Hosting Your Party’ instructional video that blends all the worst parts of infomercials and cooking programs into one giant melange of awkward acting. Well, Cabel Sasser — founder of Mac software maker Panic Inc — has remixed said video, and the result is nothing short of a triumph. Journey past the break to see what we mean.

It’s amazing what a few sheets of tinfoil can do for the strength of your wireless signal. As shown above, by carefully folding tinfoil into a parabola, you can boost your wireless strength tremendously. The fellas in the video saw gains from 82% to just under 100%, though I only saw boosts of around five percent, so your mileage may vary. This project should only take about three minutes and will hopefully leave you with impressive results. If you don’t want to attach unsightly parabolic boosters and you’re using the same basic router as the fellas in the video, you can also upgrade your firmware to DD-WRT—a free hack that will turn your $60 router into a $600 router and allow you to boost your Wi-Fi signal from your router’s control panel.

Computerworld – For years, Intel and AMD have been battling for predominance in the processor/chipset market. AMD’s latest plan seems to be to push back on economic grounds — to offer high-value budget chipsets targeted at the soon-to-be-released Windows 7 systems, and high-performance chipsets that are slightly slower, but much cheaper, than equivalent Intel products. And Intel is firing back.

AMD’s new 785G chipset, introduced last month, is designed for the mainstream and budget desktop audience. The 785G ships with drivers designed specifically to work with Windows 7, and several motherboard manufacturers, including Asus, Gigabyte, ECW and MSI, are adopting the 785G chipset to deliver the next generation of motherboards.
