    Which browser is best for you?

    Is life simpler without lots of choice? In the early years of the Internet, we had no choice but to use the Netscape web browser that was given to us. Then, one by one they have increased up to the point where there are a number of browser that claim to be better than the rest. But do you know the difference between you Internet Explorers and your Safaris? Do you know why Firefox may work better on your PC than Internet Explorer?

    In order to surf the web, you need a web browser, and today there are several different ones to choose from. If you’re looking for a lean, no-nonsense browser, Chrome is the one for you. Internet Explorer still stands as the odds on favorite when you want to make sure pages load correctly (not because of superior standards support, but because its majority market share have driven developers to code their webpages to look best on IE). Firefox has found more than a niche market by giving users near endless customization, and Apple’s Safari purports to run circles around everyone else (it doesn’t). And then there’s the cornucopia of alternative browsers and browser shells, like Flock (Firefox-based) and Avant (IE-based).

    Two weeks ago, Mozilla announced a major milestone for its Firefox (Firefox) web browser: one billion downloads. They even launched OneBillionPlusYou.com to mark the occasion and demonstrate just how large one billion really is.

    Not everyone’s in awe of the number, though. A senior executive of Microsoft, the current browser market leader, has made statements today that essentially question the validity of the one billion downloads milestone. Oh, and she talked about how IE6 cannot die as well.

    The topic of site support for IE6 has had a lot of discussion on the web recently as a result of a post on the Digg blog. Why would anyone run an eight-year old browser? Should sites continue to support it? What more can anyone do to get IE6 users to upgrade?

    For technology enthusiasts, this topic seems simple. Enthusiasts install new (often unfinished or “beta”) software all the time. Scores of posts on this site and others describe specific benefits of upgrading. As a browser supplier, we want people to switch to the latest version of IE for security, performance, interoperability, and more. So, if all of the “individual enthusiasts” want Windows XP machines upgraded from IE6, and the supplier of IE6 wants them upgraded, what’s the issue?
