NEW YORK–In a surprise move, Microsoft has started selling computers and third-party software via its online store.
It’s part of a broader push to try to give Windows the kind of lift that Apple has gotten from its network of retail stores. Microsoft had said it would sell PCs at its brick-and-mortar stores, but it plans to open just two of those this year, including a Scottsdale, Ariz., location that opens later Thursday.

Lenovo put nearly a year of research into two design changes that debuted on an updated ThinkPad laptop this week. No, not the thinner, lighter form or the textured touchpad — rather, the extra-large “Delete” and “Escape” keys.It may seem like a small change, but David Hill, vice president of corporate identity and design at Lenovo, points out, “Any time you start messing around with the keyboard, people get nervous.”

This one slipped by us but the world’s first Core i7 laptop to ship is probably worth a double-back don’t you think? The Sager NP9280 is almost certainly the same Clevo D900F we spotted at CeBIT back in March. That means a Core i7 snuggled up with Intel’s X58 chipset with triple channel DDR3 memory, 1GB of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M graphics, and a 17.1-inch 1920×1200 display. No telling how long the 12-cell Lithium-Ion battery will last but if it exceeds 30 minutes of usage then we’d be impressed. As a desktop replacement, it’s fully loaded with up to a trio or SATA hard disks, 4x built-in speakers, eSATA, HDMI and DVI video outputs, integrated 3 megapixel webcam, and 4x USB 2.0 jacks plus a single Firewire port all riding an 11.55-pound slab requiring 15.5 x 11.75 x 2.35-inches of elbow room. Unfortunately, there’s no option for running dual GTX 280M GPU in SLI, for that you’ll have to look to Alienware’s Core 2 Extreme–based M17x. The NP9280 starts at about $2,000 though we like ours maxed out with a Core i7 975 Extreme Edition desktop processor, 12GB of DDR3 memory, and 3x 160GB SSDs for more than $7,000. But hey, that’s us and we think robots are scary. Check the hover-craft inspired bottom after the break.

ASUS already struck a chord with portable gamers when it introduced the imposing W90, and now it’s looking to do the same with LAN party goers who need something just a wee bit less gargantuan. Details are light on the forthcoming G51, but we do know that it’ll arrive in a few form factors (15.6- and 16-inch models) and will give buyers the choice between a Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processor. There’s also room for up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM as well as a 1GB GeForce GTX 260M graphics card; furthermore, you’ll find an optional Blu-ray drive, 2 megapixel camera, dual 500GB hard drives and a white glossy shell. Mum’s the word on pricing, but we expect to hear more on this July-bound beauty at Computex next month.

The IdeaPad S12 isn’t the only new kit flowing from RTP today, as Lenovo is also choosing to celebrate Memorial Day with two new lappies and an all-in-one desktop. Starting things off is the IdeaPad U350 (shown above), a thin-and-light machine that packs a 13.3-inch LED-backlit display (1,366 x 768), an HDMI output, an ambient light sensor and your choice of Intel’s 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo SU3500, the 1.3GHz SU2700 or 1.2GHz Celeron 723. There’s also room for a 500GB hard drive, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a GMA 4500M / 4500 MHD graphics set, 1.3 megapixel camera, multi-touch trackpad, twin 1.5-watt speakers, Vista Home Basic / Premium and an optional 8-cell battery good for up to 10 hours of use.

Google disclosed Saturday that it shared a very small number of online documents with users who weren’t authorized to see them. The privacy glitch, caused by a software bug, affected just a tiny fraction of documents — an estimated less than .05% — wrote Jennifer Mazzon, Google Docs product manager, on a corporate blog. DropBox has to be one of the easiest ways to share files on multiple computers. After you install DropBox, there is a folder called “My Dropbox” located in your documents folder. Facebook users are at risk from malicious hackers targeting the site, online security experts warned. Account holders have been hit by several different hacking attempts in the last week, as thieves try to capitalize on the trust users place in the service. Rik Ferguson, senior security adviser at Tokyo-based Trend Micro, said that Facebook, which has more than 174 million active users worldwide, had been hit by four separate "rogue applications" and a virus targeted at users of the site.
